Really, any cacao can be used ceremonially. But drinking cacao that is grown and prepared with pure intentions brings you a deeper connection to the spirit cacao, to source. Cacao that is grown on land that hasn't been deforested, not treated with chemicals, where the growers are rewarded for their efforts by receiving above market rates. Cacao that is roasted lightly to preserve its nutrients, processed with love, and packaged in earth friendly materials. Cacao like ours.
Start by heating water gently, best to make with water that is not boiling. When hot, add your desired amount of cacao, and stir until well blended. You can sweeten it with natural sweeteners like honey, or add spices as you like.
For a ceremonial drink, we recommend adding 1 ounce of cacao to 4 ounces of water. For a daily ritual, perhaps in the morning to replace coffee, a half ounce to full ounce in an 8 ounce cup is great.
Origen Cacao Husk Tea is made from the outer shells (husks) of roasted cacao beans, thats it! It offers an abundance of benefits including theobromine. To make a tea beverage, steep the cacao husks in hot water for at least 5 minutes. It is also excellent served cold.
Yes! All of our cacaos and tea have been independently tested by a laboratory, and have tested below the recommended levels of cadmium and lead.
This is very normal! Our cacao is processed like fine chocolate, meaning it will melt in warm temperatures. If it melts and rehardens, it will take on a grey, spotted appearance, and sometimes be crumbly. This only means that the chocolate is not longer in a state of temper, but it is perfectly fine to consume.
More importantly than taking an online course, you need to fully connect to the spirit of cacao. We recommend a 15 or 30 day challenge - drink cacao everyday, first in the morning, then again in the afternoon or evening and integrate it with your daily meditation practice. Journal, write down your feelings, thoughts, observe and reflect.
When you feel that you are connected fully to the spirit of cacao, reflect on how you want to share this with others. Do you have existing practices that would complement your cacao ceremony? Do you have musical talents? Don't worry, cacao will guide you.
Starting in May of 2026, we will offer the opportunity to visit our farm for a cacao immersion retreat, where you will spend time caring for the trees, master the art of transforming cacao, learn the ancestral practices, sing cacao songs by the fire, connect to source through cacao.
Danielle has been honored with the friendship and mentorship from her relationships with the Arhuaco, Siona, Cofan and Inga. These connections are sacred and inspiring to her. It started with medicine work, learning from the Siona, Muruy; being welcomed into their communities, their families. Danielle also has been able to provide cacao training to the Arhuaco, effectively doubling their income by improving their cacao. Through the Origen Colombia Foundation and Origen Sagrada, financial support, food, medicines, school and basic supplies have been distributed when needed for the last ten years.
Not yet. Organic certification costs about $10,000 USD and takes several years to achieve. This is an impossible dream right now to the communities that we work with, including our own. However, all of the growers we offer cacao from have been inspected and vetted by us, to ensure that sustainable and organic practices are used. They are grown according to the ancestral traditions, meaning no chemical or synthetic fertilizers or pesticides.
